It's common for parents to help with the organization of college applications. But, parents, don't let that assistance go too far. You should never actually complete the applications for your student.
Parents fill out applications differently than kids do. They use different words and phrasing. And it’s usually obvious to an admissions officer. Parents who hijack the applications are often the same ones who call the admissions office for their student, often going as far as to reveal, “I’m filling out the application…” That’s calling your son's history teacher and saying, “I’m writing Dan’s paper for him…”
A student who's mature enough to go to college should be mature enough to complete the paperwork to get there. Offer support and maybe some feedback. But let kids do their own work.
