Nathan Kontny is a successful guy. He is the CEO of Highrise, the founder of two YC companies, a former engineer for President Obama’s re-election campaign, and the creator of the writing software, Draft.
Back in 9th grade, Nate got cut from the basketball team. On his father’s advice, Nate visited the coach and asked if he could be involved with the team even just to help out at practice. The coach said, “No.” But Nate learned an important lesson that helped him become who he is today: just ask.
Students, the lesson from Nate’s example is to take initiative and seek out what you want (read the whole story from Nate here).
And parents, help your kids learn to ask, and do, for themselves. Advise, guide, and encourage, don’t jump in and do the work (or the asking) for your kids.
