Cal Newport’s latest blog entry shares some great advice courtesy of Mike Rowe, Host of The Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs. They both agree that passion isn’t something that you follow. It follows you as you put in hard work to get better and contribute to the world. So people who spend months (and years) looking for the perfect job would be better off redirecting that energy into taking any job and finding a way to become great at it. You don’t have to stay in that job forever. But you can throw yourself into it while you’re there. That’s how you learn, how you get ahead, and ultimately how you’ll find your passion.
For high school students who read this blog, here are two past posts (here and here) on the benefits of part-time jobs.
Here’s one about how to thrive once you finally get hired.
And two more here and here about how to use your college career as a launching pad into a happy and productive college career.
