I’ve written before about the benefits of part-time jobs for high school students. Harvey Mackay is the author of seven New York Times best-sellers and the owner of a $110 million envelope business that employs over 600 people. Back in high school, he got his first job delivering newspapers (which required him to get up at 2:30 in the morning). Here’s his take for high school and college students on how much value he found from that experience:
I learned how to sell. I had to knock on doors—“Will you buy this newspaper?” I had to learn about accounts receivable. I had to learn about customer complaints…people skills…organization. I have mentored probably 500 people in my life…and I would always tell them, “Go get a summer job…and learn something from it. Take on some responsibility. Know that entitlements aren’t there the rest of your life."
