Is it possible to sell motivation to a family whose student doesn't have it?
We don’t sell motivation at Collegewise. While we don’t care what a student’s GPA or test scores are (we work with A students, C students, and everyone in between), the student has to want to go to college and be willing to do the work. If a family says, “We just need someone to get him motivated,” we know we’re not a good fit together. A little extra motivation and engagement are often happy by-products of our work together, but motivating unmotivated kids isn’t an outcome we can promise to deliver.
But what if you were a counselor who could do it?
If you could pull a work ethic out of an unmotivated student, if you could get a teenager who didn’t see the value of a college education to see it, you’d be in high demand as a private counselor. A lot of families need that help and would be willing to pay for it. If you could deliver on your promise, you’d be providing a valuable service and making a positive contribution to a teenager’s life. And while this should never stop anyone, you definitely wouldn’t be competing with us. We’d happily refer families who want to buy a little motivation for their student to someone who could actually give it to them.
If you’re wondering how to stand out in your marketplace, this might be a good way to do it.
