Katie and Arun, our online counselors, recently shot short introductory videos so that potential students and parents could view them on our website. The idea was that a still photo doesn’t let someone get to know them at all. But a short, honest video could at least give visitors a sense of Katie and Arun’s personalities and what they’d be like to work with.
It’s hard not to feel awkward when you’re being filmed. But they tried to follow the same advice we give students when applying to college:
1. Just be yourself.
2. Don’t worry about appealing to everybody. The right people (and colleges) will appreciate you for who you are.
We think they did a great job. They were honest about what they believe and who they like to work with. They didn't say what they thought everybody would want to hear. And in less than two minutes, any viewer can get an honest sense of what it might be like to work with either one of them.
Not everybody is going to want to hire Katie or Arun after viewing these videos. And that’s OK. The right people, the people most likely to enjoy working with them, are going to want to learn more. That’s exactly how we’ve always run our business, and how we’ve told kids to think about their college search.
Here are the finished products.
