Holden Caulfield says in “Catcher in the Rye,
"It's funny. All you have to do is say something nobody understands and they'll do practically anything you want them to."
That’s not good advice when you’re applying to college.
When you’re filling out a college application or writing your essay, don’t worry about standing out, being polished, and impressing everyone. First, just be clear. Make it easy to understand. If you win an award that’s unique to your school, explain what it is. If you’re doing an activity that’s not common, describe it. Don’t use vague language. Admissions officers are too busy to decode what you mean. Just come out and say it directly and succinctly.
Holden was wrong about this one.
